Only after the First World War Fred Roberts applies for a
job as a newspaper reporter and sub - editor tells how , in the trenches in
1916 , he found a printing press in working order . Aided by a former printer
Sergeant Harris and his friend Jack Pearson as his assistant , he prepared
Wiper Time - the name derived from the pronunciation of Ypres town soldiers .
